How do I knit a border around a finished baby blanket?

I'm making a baby blanket, 24 blocks are sewn together.Then it says to make 4 rows of the garder stitch around the blanket. It says to start with the top and bottom, then do the sides.

Where do I get the new stitches on my needle..Will the needles be long enough to knit the whole way down with all those stitches on it?

HELP!!!
