How to Knit a Blanket

Anyone can knit a blanket no matter what their skill level.

This blanket pattern is for a patchwork blanket made up of lots of knitted squares sewn together. The great thing about knitting a blanket in this way is that you can use up ends of yarn and it doesn't take long to knit a square.

Another reason I like this pattern is that you can knit a couple of squares, start another knitting project, and then return to knitting squares again a bit later. I find that alternating projects is a great way to avoid boredom and frustration.

This pattern can be adapted for any yarn or blanket size. The one essential point is that all your squares have the same measurements. Also, reversible stitches work best.

Skill Level

Easy / Beginner

Suggested Materials

DK yarn in a variety of different colors

4mm (size 6 US) straight needles

Instructions

Cast on 21 stitches

Row 1: *K1, P1, repeat from * to end

Repeat Row 1 until you have knitted a square

Bind off

Knit 48 squares in about 5 different colors

To make up, weave in the ends of the yarn and sew the squares together with invisible seams.

Tip: If you are using a stitch with an obvious direction (such as garter stitch), for a fun effect you can alternate the grain of the squares when you sew them together.
